5G AND GEOSPATIAL DATA

Prediction of radio wave propagation with Wireless InSite propagation model – a product of our partners Remcom (https://www.remcom.com/wireless-insite-em-propagation-software) – based on the Visicom 3D model tailored to 5G.

Bearing the development of telecommunication industry in mind, it is most certainly that in the nearest future a huge amount of various devices will be available online providing multimedia services, alternate/augmented realities, IoT solutions. Such innovations are already featured many aspects of human activities; further, they will become part of our ordinary life:  transport, energetics, healthcare, manufacturing, business, public safety etc.

Currently, the radio-planning processes are in progress serving as a foundation for 5G-networks widespread implementation and ensuring their dynamic development. Global mobile operators and vendors swiftly move from testing and trials to launching, generating new rules and technical requirements, simultaneously reducing the costs.

The main benefit of 5G networks is their ability to carry an enormous amount of data, which is possible due to high-frequency radio waves they are based on. On the other hand, such mm-wave frequencies are substantial impacted when they face either small obstacles. 3D Geodata as a model describing the environment serve as a basis for 5G planning. Because of the sensitivity of radio waves it is necessary to have an adequate level of maps detalization, which tends to grow – buildings are described with roofs features, pipes, air conditioners, spires, sloping roofs; vegetation, which also can affect the signal propagation, is represented starting from solid bodies with average height to 3D separate trees with crown and trunk features. All these trends motivate geodata providers to invest more into R&D creating new technologies for 3D data processing; to design deep neural networks; to implement machine learning architectures for satellite image classification, segmentation, and comprehensive automation of all obstacles processing and visualization.

The geodata suppliers are promptly adopting to the growing demands announcing the extending production capabilities and technologies. On the other hand, the amount of such detailed 3D data is increasingly enhancing, thereby outpacing the potential of planning tools to handle them. Now some tool vendors are actively working on this, so, once the new advanced algorithms are available, the next great stage in 5G planning enabling ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency will be in service.

5G will make networks several times faster, increase networks capacity, open possibilities to cover not only dense built-up territories in cities but suburbs and villages, and it will really unlock the potential of IoT and smart cities development, connecting all people and all things.

“The most interesting things in this way are all new possibilities and services, that we are not able to predict yet” – said the CEO of geodata provider company VISICOM (Ukraine), Dr. Volodymyr Kolinko – “and our company is ready to support all aspects of new generation networks development, since geospatial data and mobile networks are of crucial importance to each other and to their mutual future”.
